What’s the science behind the Migraine Buddy Trigger Report?

To receive your own Migraine Buddy Triggers Report, we just need you to record 3 migraine attacks with trigger information (doesn’t include when you tap on “No idea”) in the app over the last 3 months. If you haven’t recorded enough attacks we’ll kindly let you know when you receive your report.

The more attacks you have recorded, the more our calculations will be accurate. We define confidence levels as show below:

To calculate your Trigger ScoreTM we are using the following factors:

  • The amount of unique triggers: how many unique triggers you recorded
  • The recurrence of your triggers: how frequently those triggers are causing you an attack
  • The stability of your trigger combinations over time: how often you recorded the same triggers

We choose migraines with triggers from the current month or from past 3 months if the former is too low.

Your Trigger score is then normalised and standardised to make sure:

  • You can compare your score with others in the community
  • You can compare your own score overtime

Here is an example of how we calculate the Trigger Score:

Trigger 1Trigger 2
Attack 1Skipped Meal Stress
Attack 2Skipped Meal Stress
Attack 3Weather Stress

In the past month you have recorded 3 attacks where:

  • You have recorded 3 unique triggers (Skipped Meal, Stress, Weather) → this is a low number of unique triggers
  • Stress and Skipped Meal are recurring triggers → most of your triggers are recurring ones
  • Stress and Skipped Meal are almost always paired → the combination of your triggers are quite stable

In this example, your Trigger ScoreTM would be 26/100. Your score is low therefore your case is considered “easy”. This is good news and a few simple actions will help you control your migraines easily.

To calculate your Trigger Improvement ScoreTM we are using the following factors:

  • The frequency of your trigger: how often you have recorded a given trigger
  • The actionability of a given trigger: how easy/difficult would it be to eliminate a given trigger from your daily life (based on a ranking made by our expert in psychology)
  • How much improvement you can expect*: how positively could it impact your attacks (in terms of pain intensity, attack duration and affected activities) if you eliminate those triggers

Your Trigger Improvement score is then normalised and standardised to make sure:

  • You can compare your score with others in the community
  • You can compare your own score overtime

*Here is an example of the logic we apply to calculate the improvement you can expect:

You have recorded Skipped Meal on some of your attacks. We will compare what was your condition on the attacks you have logged vs. the ones you haven’t logged this trigger.

Trigger recorded
during the attack
Trigger not recorded
during the attack
Improvement you can expect
Pain intensity 8/103/10Significant
Attack duration 10 hours10 hoursNo impact
Affected activitiesMissed workSlower at workSlight

Note: for cases when we do not have sufficient data, we may compare you with users who have a similar profile.
