Migraine Journey Wednesdays (Vol.18 – Cheryl Kuyten)

Hi everyone, I’m Cheryl, currently 53 this year, married with a daughter and I reside in Canada.

My Migraine History

My migraines started in 2004 at the age of 40. There was no prior history of migraines and no change in migraines after menopause in 2012. Weather is the only trigger i have and i’ve had severe migraines but was able to manage pain with Botox treatments for the last 10 yrs.

The People Around Me

My 2 dogs stick very close to me and become protective when I have a migraine. People around me are somewhat supportive but they don’t really understand what happens when I’m sick with a migraine. Some friends and family believe that I’m faking it or use that I use it as an excuse to not do things.

The Effects of Migraines on My Life

Migraines have definitely taken a toll on me. It has caused me to lose jobs and friends have stopped inviting me to go to places, and i’ve had to miss some family events.

What I’ve Tried

It definitely hasn’t been easy. Tritiphans didn’t work for me, antidepressants provided some relief in preventing chronic migraines, Cambia helped me with preventing a full migraine, and Advil, an anti-seizure medication gave me severe side-effects. On days things get unbearable, I just go to bed and sleep. I find that that helps me the most.

Some Advice for My Fellow Migraineurs

Educate yourself and those around you who are also affected by your migraines. It’ll be advisable to join groups to learn more and know that your migraines are unique to you. Be willing to try different treatments and meds to find a solution that will help you and give you some relief.

Migraines are life changing but hopefully you’re able to find relief and have at least one person that supports you with what you’re going through and that you have more and more better days.

Thank you, Cheryl, for stepping forward to share your migraine journey with everyone. If you would like to share your story and let your voice be heard like Cheryl, you may do so here: bit.ly/2rJcpMR
