I am a 46 year-old black female living in the United States of America.

My Migraine History

The first headache I can remember that was considered a migraine would’ve been in my 20’s. I thought it was just another headache but somehow it was different. It lasted for what seemed like days. The sensitivity to light begin there too. On average, I pretty much have quite a few really bad days a month.

Better days are what I called them. These are the days that my medicine does not help right away. I’m still unsure of what exactly triggers my migraines. However, I have found that  overcast days or the barometric pressure adjusting has a correlation.

The People Around Me

Everyone around me is supportive. Everyone knows that when I’m absent, I’m probably having a bad day/crisis.

The Effect of Migraines on My Life

Day-to-day activities can be altered dramatically because of my migraines. If I’m having a bad day, the only place I go to is work. Due to the fact that I work for myself, I lose a lot of hours and pay.

What I’ve Tried

I am currently taking to migraine medications, one is built into my blood pressure medicine. I am also taking two different nausea pills….because once the vomiting starts, I will no longer be able to take the medicine needed to encourage the migraine to subside.

Days Things get Unbearable

If things are really unbearable – meaning migraine nausea and vomiting, I go to the ER.

Some Advice for My Fellow Migraineurs

I encourage you to journal your migraines. This helps doctors make better judgements about what to prescribe. Although I know nothing is going to be 100% after living with migraines for so long, you’ll get through it, you just have to figure out how to cope. Oh just another tip, it’s always handy to have sunglasses ? with you at all times.

Thank you, Jessica, for stepping forward to share your migraine journey with everyone. When you share your stories it not only helps others but you heal in the process too.
